TESOL Program Overview
This exciting new program is designed to promote excellence in teaching by equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Such knowledge and skills include an overview of the structure of English and the concepts, principles, and best practices associated with language learning and teaching.
The program will be comprised of 13 weeks of instruction with the equivalent of 100 contact hours and 20 hours of practicum-related activity.
Upon program completion, students will have developed knowledge of English grammar, theories of teaching languages, and best practices for teaching English as an additional language (EAL). They will also have applied knowledge of English grammar in the teaching and design of lessons for EAL learners, and will have produced culturally appropriate materials, assessments, and lesson plans.
The structure will consist of three 3-credit undergraduate-level courses:
Certificate and nine college credits from the University of Massachusetts Amherst are conferred upon successful completion.
